International exposure at the University of Reading’s Campus in Malaysia

The University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) is an international branch campus of the University of Reading in the UK, recognised as one of world’s top 200 universities (QS 2019 ranking). UoRM is wholly-owned by the University of Reading, which means that it is an integral part of the university rather than a partnership with a local or external party.

A key benefit of studying at UoRM is the fact that students study the same programme and curriculum as they would if they were on the Reading UK campus. Academic standards and quality remain the same. However, students pay significantly lower fees than if they were to go to the UK, not to mention the substantial saving in living costs. Students, therefore, get the best of both worlds – a prestigious UK degree at around half the full cost of studying in the UK.

A further benefit of studying with UoRM is that, should they wish, students have the opportunity to spend some portion of their studies on the Reading UK campus. This is academically possible because, as mentioned earlier, the programmes on the Malaysia campus are identical to those on the Reading UK campus. Our mobility programme allows for undergraduates to spend Year 2 of their degree on the Reading UK campus, which is the most advisable period for them to go to the UK and adjust to a new environment. Note that students at UoRM can opt to attend the university graduation ceremony either in the UK or Malaysia.

Students who are keen to spend all three years of their undergraduate degree in the UK should consider enrolling on UoRM’s International Foundation Programme (IFP). Students who complete the IFP can progress to the Reading UK campus and receive a 20% discount on international student fees for all three years of study – a substantial saving!

Regardless of whether they study at the Malaysia or Reading UK campus, students get exposed to an international, English-speaking environment. Students can expect to see an improvement in their English and communication skills. Importantly, students are put through the rigour of a UK academic experience where they develop into independent learners who are capable of finding information, examining issues and are less dependent on being spoon-fed. In addition to academic skills, students develop soft skills such as problem-solving, working in teams and communications, which are vital for personal development.

The university understands that career and employment opportunities are a key priority for both students and parents. The programmes offered at UoRM have been specifically selected in areas such as finance, accounting, real estate, quantity surveying, psychology and law, where we know graduates are in high demand.

Furthermore, the university has forged strong links with industry and professional bodies to ensure graduates have an edge in the job market. For example, we are the first in the world to launch a partnership with ICAEW (the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) called the Henley-ICAEW Programme (HIP) for accounting and finance students. It is not surprising that many students secure job offers through work placement even before they graduate.

A key advantage of studying at UoRM’s Campus in Educity, an education hub established by the government in Iskandar Johor, is the environment. Educity is the ideal location for students to balance serious academic study with the kind of social life expected by young adults, but without the hassle, distraction and cost of living in a big city.

Students at Educity enjoy world-class sports facilities that include an Olympic swimming pool, diving pool, running track, indoor stadium and fitness centre. Students also have a plentiful choice of affordable accommodation options including the International Student Village in Educity or nearby service apartments like EcoNest that provide condo-style living with swimming pool and facilities.

For shopping and leisure, there’s plenty to do in Johor and the surrounding area including multiple shopping malls and resorts like Legoland. Singapore is less than 25 minutes away, and there is a regular and frequent bus service from Johor Bahru.

In sum, the University of Reading Malaysia, a branch campus of the University of Reading, provides students with the benefit of a prestigious UK degree with strong employment prospects, lower costs compared with studying and living in the UK for three years, and the opportunity to gain exposure in an international environment.
