The healthcare industry is constantly evolving, opening up new avenues for tackling diverse challenges around the world. Medical professionals are often in the vanguard of addressing global healthcare concerns, playing increasingly important roles in all aspects. Therefore, it is vital for students who have a strong desire to pursue careers in medicine to be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead and, more importantly, to understand how to future-proof the world.

With the noble vision to empower the upcoming generation of medical professionals, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), an international branch campus of Newcastle University, UK, offers world-class UK medical education on Malaysian soil. Its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme is a five-year integrated undergraduate medical study that is identical to what is offered at the university’s Medical School in the UK.

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia is hosting an on-campus Open Day on 19th August 2023.

“The science of medicine is fascinating. As a doctor, I’m able to  advocate evidence-based intervention and impact my patients positively, which  really inspires me,” shared Dr. Edmund LC Ong, Honorary Professor of Medicine at  NUMed.

Dr. Ong has vast experience in Infectious Diseases and General Internal  Medicine, a field in which he has garnered many years of practice in the UK. He  believes that successful medical students need to be able to assimilate, understand, and apply a wide knowledge base within a clinical setting. “They should be  compassionate, and have good communication and organisational skills as well,” he added.

In its commitment to delivering high-quality medical education, NUMed plays  an essential role in shaping doctors of the future and preparing them for the world of  medicine. “For one, NUMed’s academics consist of skilled and trained lecturers from  diverse backgrounds, with a number of them seconded from the UK campus.  Secondly, the university uses an integrated case-led teaching approach that focuses  on looking at patients holistically,” said Dr. Ong.

On top of that, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) has approved this undergraduate programme, which is also recognised by professional bodies including the General Medical Council in the UK (GMC), the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), the Pakistan Medical Commission, the Medical Council of Thailand, the Maldives Medical and Dental Council, and the Mauritius Higher Education Commission.

“While all five years of the programme are delivered in Malaysia, students will have the option of studying at the UK campus, either for up to eight weeks during their fourth year, or for an extra year to obtain their intercalated research qualification at either Bachelors or Masters level,” said Ms. Premila Nair, NUMed’s Chief Operating Officer.

esides its acclaimed MBBS programme, NUMed also offers a highly sought-after 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences degree programme.

Additionally, NUMed offers a Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, a pre-undergraduate programme that will set students on the right path if they want to pursue a career in medicine, primarily in MBBS or Biomedical Sciences. The university also offers a 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.

NUMed is hosting an On-Campus Open Day on 19th August 2023. This will be a great opportunity for those who are interested to learn more about the prestigious medical education offered there. The Open Day is aimed at walking participants through the university and provides hands-on learning opportunities about programmes available there. Besides that, participants will also be able to glean valuable insights from NUMed’s alumni and students, who will be on hand to share their experiences.
