A Vibrant Learning Community at NUMed
In keeping with its mission to develop an attractive, supportive, and inspiring environment for its students, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) plays an integral part in creating opportunities that lie at the intersection between lifelong memories and service to empower them to make a difference in community.
NUMed designs its events around its values of academic excellence, multiculturalism, internationalism and service to society, said Prof. Chris Baldwin, Provost and CEO of NUMed. “Our students aren’t here exclusively for classroom learning; they’re also learning how to be part of a community.
“We want to provide them with an enriching platform that offers a myriad of opportunities to contribute.”
This year, students of NUMed have participated in numerous events, including volunteering at Kechara Soup Kitchen and the university’s annual Stage 4 Health Camp “Karnival Jom Sihat”.
Prof. Baldwin said the events gave students a chance to gain invaluable experiences.
“NUMed requires not just great students but a vibrant community to support their development and to prepare them for academic, personal, and professional success,” he added.
The university’s Stage 4 Health Camp “Karnival Jom Sihat”, which aims to promote health awareness, took place at Kampung Dato Sulaiman Menteri in November 2018. The event serves a dual purpose of giving back to the community as well as training the next generation of medical professionals.
“We get to learn how to contribute back to society by raising health awareness as well as enhancing our communication and collaboration skills. This helps us become better-rounded doctors,” said Syafika Amanda, the Vice President of the organising committee.
Students who participated in the volunteering activity with Kechara Soup Kitchen found the experience to be fulfilling as it allowed them to help create positive change in their community and gain a better understanding of values and empathy.
As well as events run by NUMed, students are encouraged to participate in activities beyond the university, such as the Medics Intervarsity Games (MIVG), which is organised by the Asian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) Malaysia. The national sports event, held annually, is designed to promote healthy lifestyles and foster a sense of camaraderie among the future doctors of Malaysia.
