Engineering Leaders in Innovation
“In class, you will get both hands-on practice and theoretical knowledge, but self-enhancement is also important for you to survive in real life. You need to be involved and be brave enough to take the risk. Failure is the start of success; it is the courage to continue that counts,” shared Nurul Husna binti Mohd Yusoff, a student at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia. This inspiring 21-year-old was recently selected to attend the prestigious Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) programme in London from 12 to 26 January 2019, making her the youngest participant there.
The Fellowship attracts the best and brightest entrepreneurial engineers from around the world, and Husna, who is currently pursuing her MEng Chemical Engineering with Oil and Gas at the university, felt honoured to have been able to be a part of it. “To be honest, I did not expect it as I was up against top researchers, lecturers and entrepreneurs. I am, therefore, grateful for this opportunity and took it as a personal challenge to get out of my comfort zone,” she said.
According to Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, Provost and Chief Executive Officer of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, “This was an exceptional experience for Husna as well as a proud moment for the university. At Heriot-Watt, we are passionate about encouraging more women to consider engineering as a career option; Husna has worn the hat as one of our university’s ambassadors for this global agenda well.”
Parallel with the Malaysian Government’s endeavours to increase the number of engineering students, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia provides a direct pathway for its students, beginning with its Foundation in Science programme that aims to enable them to build a solid base of skills and knowledge and prepare them for the next step. After completing this, they will have access to a wide range of the university’s undergraduate programmes, including Chemical Engineering.
The internationally recognised MEng Chemical Engineering programme offered by the university is designed to fulfil the requirements of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) as well as the Engineering Council UK for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Subsequently, students will be able to enhance their employability globally.
Furthermore, the university’s strong industry network allows students to dip their toes in the working world even before they graduate. Among others, they will have opportunities to participate in site visits, expert talks and field trips, and gain invaluable insights from industry experts themselves.
A leader in world-class teaching and practical, leading-edge research, Heriot-Watt University was established in 1821 as the world’s first mechanics institute.
