Reduce Your Internet Carbon Footprint

Internet carbon footprint is an estimate of the climate change impact of using the net. This includes the electricity used to power electronic devices like computers and tablets, download files and open web pages and e-mails, and even the air conditioning to keep the servers from overheating.

As the world moves into isolation mode, there is a big surge of internet usage for businesses, education, and personal connections. Voice and video calls on Whatsapp for instance, are double their usual levels, according to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Reduce your web-based emission with these simple steps:

  1. Reduce the number of e-mail newsletters you sign up for. The average e-mail has a carbon footprint of 4 grams, while an extra-large attachment can range up to 50 grams.
  2. Turn off video autoplay on your browser; it is a waste of energy to load videos that you do not necessarily want to watch.
  3. Keep your screen brightness low.
  4. Move your image and video quality to the lowest setting.
  5. Set a time-out for web browsing, and avoid the temptation of being glued to the screen.
