Student Life at University of Reading @ Educity, Iskandar

Students spend at least three years at university studying for their undergraduate degree, so it’s important that they make the most of their time. Not only does this involve getting on with the academic work that is required for students to earn their degree but also the opportunity to develop into an independent adult who can make and take responsibility for their own decisions.

At the same time, the transition from school to university is a big change for many students. At school, teachers direct and schedule the activities that a student will be involved in, whereas at university, students have the freedom to decide what activities they wish to be involved in.

At the University of Reading Malaysia, we provide students with ample opportunities to lead a full and enriching life as a student.

First, there’s our campus location in Educity, Iskandar Johor. Educity is an education hub established by the government that is home to a number of different education partners, including the University of Reading. The spacious environment at Educity allows for a range of recreational activities. There’s a world-class sports facility that includes an Olympic swimming pool, diving pool, running track, indoor stadium and fitness centre. There’s no excuse for students not to exercise and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Competitions are held between different education institutions regularly, and the student community at Educity allows students to develop a wider network of friends than if they were studying at a single institution.Second, the campus environment at the University of Reading Malaysia is second to none. Our modern, architecturally-stunning campus building is an integrated facility where everything is close at hand including classrooms, lecture theatres, learning resource centre, eating spots and student social areas. Our campus also houses specialised labs such as our financial dealing room and BIM (business information modelling) lounge which is fitted out with the latest technology. Superfast wi-fi is available throughout the campus, so students have no problem catching up with friends on Facebook! The campus has round-the-clock security and there is ample parking.

Third, unlike some other institutions, students at the University of Reading Malaysia won’t find themselves in a class with 200 other students. Our class sizes are smaller, typically less than 40 students, which allows each student to have more personal attention with faculty members. Our campus in Malaysia follows the same curriculum as that used on the UK campus, so students are assured that they get the same level of academic rigour. Furthermore, the university allocates each student with an academic tutor to provide additional guidance, advice and support.

Fourth, one of the benefits of our campus location in Educity are the plentiful and affordable accommodation options. Students can choose to stay at the International Student Village on the Educity campus itself or nearby service apartments like EcoNest that provide condo-style living with swimming pool and facilities. EcoNest provides a free shuttle bus between EcoNext and campus.

Finally, if its shopping and leisure you’re after after a hard week at work, there’s plenty to do in Johor and the surrounding area. , Iskandar Johor has plenty of shopping malls in the surrounding area including Paradigm mall, Johor Premium outlets and the IKEA furniture store. For a nice fun weekend, there is Legoland, Desaru resort and other attractions close by. Furthermore, Singapore is less than 25 minutes away, and there is a regular bus service from Johor Bahru.

In sum, Educity is the ideal location for students to balance serious academic study with the kind of social life expected by young adults, but without the hassle, distraction and cost of living in a big city.
