Position yourself for success with the University of Reading Malaysia

If you’ve completed high school and you’re looking into advancing your education by going to university, consider it an investment for the future. But in a competitive age where the market is saturated with different options, choosing the right higher education institution for you can be a challenge. For individuals who are vying for a top quality undergraduate degree that will give them a strong foundation for a successful and lucrative career, the University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) offers a range of courses including foundation programmes, undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees, which are challenging, fulfilling, and in many cases, life-changing.

With a rich heritage dating back over 150 years, the University of Reading, together with the world-leading Henley Business School, which has been operating for over 70 years, is ranked among the top 200 universities in the world according to the QS World University Rankings 2019. Its long established reputation for academic excellence and student support means that well motivated and hard-working students will be equipped for academic success. If studying in the UK is too far from home or out of your budget, the University of Reading’s Malaysia campus offers students the same excellent standard of higher education as its parent campus in the UK. UoRM is located in EduCity, in the heart of the fast developing economic region known as Iskandar Puteri, in Johor and a short drive from the Second Link to Singapore. Uniquely, UoRM offers students the best of both worlds – the chance to study a prestigious UK degree, delivered by expert academics, on Malaysian soil.

Fast-track your way to an undergraduate degree
Students who have completed Form Five and are looking for an alternative to A-Levels can consider a Foundation in Business or Foundation in Science programme at UoRM. Both programmes are a one-year intensive course tailored to prepare students academically and socially to pursue an undergraduate degree. The foundation programmes open doors to a wide range of pathways and are tailored with each student’s future degree in mind. Both include Academic Skills, a module that prepares students for the challenges and rigours of a degree, with guidance and support provided by tutors.

Edward Ng says his degree at Henley Business School Malaysia has opened up many doors for him

UoRM student, Edward Ng, completed a Foundation in Business programme before progressing to an undergraduate degree. The 20 year-old from Johor Bahru, says the Academic Skills module equipped him for the challenges of his Finance and Business Management degree with Henley Business School. “The module focussed on academic writing and presentation skills. At undergraduate degree level, all of us are required to think critically and form our own opinions on a topic. In my course, we deliver many oral presentations and debates which require a full set of presentation skills. The foundation programme gave me a good grounding for this.” Aside from studying hard, students are given ample opportunities for fun and leisure. “I liked the team building activities very much, for example, Welcome Week and the Foundation Away Day,” chimes Ng.

Choose the right degree for you
Once students have successfully completed a foundation programme, they can progress to one of UoRM’s internationally renowned undergraduate degree programmes, at either the Malaysia campus or in the UK. Students who are fascinated with the human mind can choose to study a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Psychology, which is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Students who want to enter the healthcare industry can embark on the MPharm 2+2 pharmacy degree, which gives students the opportunity to spend two years at the Malaysia campus and two years at the UK campus. The Reading School of Pharmacy is ranked within the top 10 in the UK for pharmacy and pharmacology, meaning students are taught by some of the best in the field.

The University’s School of the Built Environment, which is ranked 4th in the UK and 43rd in the world, offers undergraduate degrees in quantity surveying, building surveying and construction management. Students who opt for one of these degrees will be studying in a living laboratory where they will get practical experience in some of Malaysia’s largest, most innovative development projects. All three programmes are recognised by professional bodies internationally, including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Chartered Institute of Building, and the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors.

Students who wish to embark on a top quality business degree, can choose from a range of programmes under Henley Business School, which is one of only a few business schools around the globe to be triple-accredited by American, British and European accrediting bodies (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA). Students can choose from either: a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Finance and Business Management, a unique degree which is offered exclusively at the Malaysia campus; a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Management and Business, which is ranked number eight in the UK for graduate career prospects; a BSc Accounting and Finance degree which is ranked within the top 20 in the UK for overall subject; or a BSc Real Estate degree which is rated the best in the UK according to subject. All undergraduate degrees at UoRM are honours degrees.

In addition, graduates who are striving to position themselves as leading investment bankers with expertise in Islamic Finance, Henley Business School is offering a Master’s degree in Investment Banking and Islamic Finance, which is jointly delivered by the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) – the global university of Islamic finance. A range of PhD programmes are also available for avid researchers who are wanting to reach the next level in their education.

Second year Finance and Business Management degree student, Ng, says he chose his degree based on his personal interest in finance. He says the course has opened many doors for him and his peers. “I like Enhancement Week where the university invites guest speakers from different companies and industries to share their experiences and offer job opportunities.”

Ng is one of many students to be offered an internship by one of Henley Business School’s many industry connections. “I am working for Premier Plus Property Consultancy Sdn. Bhd as a Sales and Marketing Intern. I’ve learnt that the role is not just about selling a property or a house, but selling the ideas of how to invest in real estate to make passive income,” he says.

Preparing students to be successful leaders has always been the stronghold of Henley Business School; the school’s endeavour is to empower individuals to become great professionals and outstanding business leaders who think with clarity and act with confidence and conviction. Ng’s leadership journey accelerated when he was elected as the Education Officer of the Reading University Malaysia Student’s Association at the beginning of 2018. “I have gained a lot from being Education Officer. It is shaping and building up my soft skills and technical skills,” says Ng.

Rewarding excellence
The University of Reading rewards the brightest and best students at all its campuses by offering a range of generous scholarships, bursaries and fee discounts, which includes the Provost’s Award which offers the top, high achieving students the equivalent of a 100 percent scholarship towards their fees. Students who perform well at foundation level and progress to an undergraduate degree at UoRM are also eligible for a variety of High Achiever’s Scholarships. Domestic students are also eligible to apply for a wide range of external scholarships being offered by organisations including Khazanah Watan, Great Eastern, Gamuda Land, The Edge, and The Star.
