Global Experts Convene in Malaysia to Tackle Acute Medical Challenges at Regional Conference 2019

Over 150 world-renowned key physicians and doctors have gathered in Malaysia for Regional Conference 2019 to share knowledge and research and spur innovation in Acute Medicine – a new and emerging field that plays an increasingly important and critical role in healthcare.

Jointly organised by the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the College of Physicians, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, and Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), the highly successful three-day international conference was hosted by NUMed Malaysia on 26th April 2019 and helmed by Datuk Dr Paras Doshi. The Meeting was officiated by the Director General of Health Datuk Dr Noorhisham Abdullah.

From acute neurology, cardiovascular and gastroenterology, to pain management and skills, the conference aims to stimulate collaborative efforts and conversation that will advance solutions to the common medical challenges in acute medicine as well as strengthening international collaborations between the Royal College Of Physicians Edinburgh, College of Physicians Malaysia and the Ministry of Health.

“The Ministry of Health has been keen to bring educational events like Regional Conference 2019 on a regional level right to the doorstep to benefit local medical practitioners and improve the healthcare sector of the nation,” highlighted Datuk Dr Noorhisham Abdullah.

The conference featured leading figures and experts from the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Malaysia. Key international speakers at the event include Prof. Sunil Bhandari, International Director RCPE at Hull Royal Infirmary, Prof. Derek Bell OBE, President of Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Dr. Lim Zi Yi from Parkway Cancer Centre and Dr. Chit Cheng Yeoh from Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth. The distinguished local faculty amongst many others included Datuk Jayaram Menon, Dr G R Letchuman Ramanathan, & Prof Dr Roslina Abdul Manap.

According to Datuk Dr Paras Doshi who is also an acute medicine physician, this conference is geared towards Acute Medicine, which is a new and developing field in Malaysia. The theme of the Meeting was “Still getting it right the first time!”

“Acute Medicine can prove instrumental in reinforcing the belief that breadth in medical care is equally important as depth. All physicians though subspecialised must not neglect their roots in general medicine when it comes to treating the general population at large,” said Datuk Dr Paras Doshi.

“This regional meeting was the result of increased cooperation between sister Colleges of Medicine in their respective countries and should be encouraged so that we can all learn from each other,” highlighted Dr G R Letchuman Ramanathan, President of the College of Physicians.

In addition to a comprehensive programme with more than 25 presenters on a myriad of topics related to acute medicine, the three-day conference offers attendees workshops, symposiums, and exhibitions, with a special preparatory PACES course and mock exam led by Prof. Bhandari to help Malaysian doctors acquire the prestigious MRCP (UK) diploma.

The conference also saw the conferment of Fellowship by College of Physicians FCPAMM to subspecialty physicians in a form of peer recognition of medical training and experience in Malaysia.
