As the international branch campus of Newcastle University, UK, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) welcomes students from different backgrounds while offering the same curricula as its parent campus. This makes it easier for students in Malaysia and Southeast Asia to obtain a world-class education.

Undergraduate students at NUMed have the privilege of getting part of their education at the UK campus, giving them the chance to interact with a larger international population. Students who enrol in its 2 + 1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences (BMS) programme will spend their final year of study in the UK, while Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students have the option of taking part in an exchange programme or completing their intercalated coursework at the UK campus before returning to NUMed to finish their studies.

International campus transfer programmes provide opportunities for students to immerse themselves in a new culture, language, and way of life. They will be able to obtain an education that spans beyond borders, allowing them to enhance their study experience and broaden their perspectives.

Many NUMed students who participated in various campus transfer programmes have found the experience to be beneficial for their personal growth.

According to Valyn Tang, her experience studying at the UK campus helped her to hone her sense of independence.

“My experience in the UK was exciting, eye-opening, and life-changing! It gave me an opportunity to go beyond my comfort zone, experience a different culture and lifestyle, and become more independent,” shared Valyn Tang Yi Tein, a Year 3 MBBS student who studied at the UK campus during the 2022/23 academic year. The exchange programme commenced from September to December 2022.

Students tend to develop and hone a range of soft skills during their stint, including adaptability, communication, cross-cultural understanding, and problem-solving, all of which are highly sought after by employers. Besides that, exchange programmes often offer access to diverse academic perspectives, teaching methods, and course offerings. This can lead to a richer educational experience and exposure to new fields of study.

Experiencing life in a different country and being exposed to different backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultures also allow students to learn from their international peers as they explore and expand their areas of interest as well as absorbing different perspectives and ideas. This will increase their critical thinking abilities and broaden their understanding of the world. As a result, they will be better equipped to meet the challenges of their careers no matter where they end up.

Building relationships and networks abroad can be beneficial for future opportunities in both the personal and professional spheres. Therefore, the connections forged through cross-cultural interactions may lead to collaborations, job opportunities, and a more diverse perspective on global issues.
