Top Universities in Asia Accept American High School Diplomas

The American education system is one of the most diverse in the world. Known for its flexibility, the system allows students to select their choices of studies without being bound by a pre-determined pathway. In essence, the American education system facilitates the development of independent, well-rounded individuals, who not only have an excellent grounding in academics but are also well-equipped with critical-thinking, problem-solving and creative skills that can be advantageous in real-life situations.

There are four main stages in the American education system, each representing an integral phase of a child’s development as they progress toward adulthood. These consist of early childhood (pre-school), elementary school, middle school and high school, and are further divided into grades (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12). The required age range for each stage varies according to the school or state structure. Typically, the American high school diploma program starts at Grade 9 and ends upon the completion of Grade 12. Students must accumulate a specific number of credits required by the school system to graduate. The high school diploma is evidence that the student has completed a rigorous course of study; it represents the knowledge and skills gained throughout the student’s years of formal education.

An American high school diploma indicates that the student is well prepared for their future. Those looking to continue with their higher education will find that there are plenty of tertiary educational institutes around the world that will accept this qualification. Among them are Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS) in Singapore, both of which are highly ranked in Asia and the world. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings: Asia 2018, NTU takes the top spot with NUS in second place. According to QS World University Ranking 2018, NTU is 11th in the world, which is the highest position attained by an Asian university.

Upon joining the workforce later, American high school diploma holders will find that employers will appreciate the high degree of critical-thinking skills and adaptability that they have cultivated during their formative years. Thus, the American high school diploma is akin to a golden ticket for those entering the working world.
