Nurturing the Next Generation of Engaged & Skilled Researchers
Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) is preparing to welcome a new batch of biomedical sciences (BMS) graduates to its BMS Graduate Research Fellowship, a year-long placement designed around innovation that expands fundamental knowledge, addresses societal and global needs, supports sustainable economic growth, and promotes health and wellbeing.
The Graduate Research Fellowship is a professional development curriculum tailored for the new graduates to delve into a variety of innovative research projects available at NUMed. Throughout the fellowship experience, the research fellows have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects and are fully immersed in the research process under the expert guidance of NUMed’s world- renowned faculty, with the shared goal of pioneering solutions to global challenges.
“On top of from being able to give back to my alma mater, I appreciate the opportunity to be part of impactful research projects like the ones I’m currently involved in: leukaemia and antibiotic resistance,” said Naveen Eugene Louis, a current BMS Graduate Research Fellow at NUMed.
“Being a fresh graduate in today’s world is challenging. I still deem the day I got my appointment letter from NUMed for this position the best in my life. I feel privileged to be part of such an esteemed faculty with some of the most respected experts in the world,” Naveen shared.
Additionally, the research fellows also take an active leadership role in teaching, including guiding Stage 1 and Stage 2 BMS students to maintain good laboratory practices in their BMS practical classes.
Chow Min Yee, another BMS research fellow, states that besides providing support in the development of their research areas, the research fellows are also in charge of managing laboratories, guiding experiments and demonstrating the correct use of equipment to BMS Stage 1 and Stage 2 students.
“In addition to being able to work side by side with skilled professionals, I can also develop communication skills and the knowledge of laboratory management, which is one of the key skills of a researcher. This fellowship enriches my professional qualifications to help advance my career goals through valuable hands-on experience,” she added.
