NUMed Student Achieves Outstanding Academic Success
Medical school is known for being exceptionally challenging, medical students are required to not just master book upon book of complex scientific knowledge but also be effective communicators, critical thinkers and problem solvers. So how does one not just survive in medical school but excel distinctively to become a top multiple award-winning medical student?
“My personal tip to achieving success is being consistent and possessing a strong mentality, perseverance, when facing challenges. The more obstacles you conquer, the nearer you are in reaching your goals. I am a firm believer that without hard work and dedication, success is impossible,” stated Leow Tze Hao, a recent MBBS graduate and top student from Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed).
Leow, who hails from Penang, had the highest performance throughout his undergraduate academic career as a medical student in the university and earned multiple distinguished awards including the EduCity Best Student Award 2019, the prestigious Walton Prize, the TM Teoh award. He was in the Dean’s Merit list for all of the five years of his undergraduate study.
In regards to studying strategies, Leow cites his use of the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Based) method as a vital tool to success. The SMART method creates verifiable trajectories towards a certain objective, with clear milestones and an estimation of the goal’s attainability.
“NUMed taught me this immensely effective method early on in Stage 1 and I have implemented it ever since. By using this method, you can constantly experience a sense of achievement while studying or revising and thus, be less likely to experience burnouts,” he shared.
The top student, whose friends and lecturers describe as a determined, friendly and helpful extrovert, stated that the next step of his journey is to work in the UK as a Foundation Year One doctor in Norwich. He plans to subsequently secure his MRCP qualification and work towards becoming a Gastroenterologist and subspecialise in Hepatology.
Leow expressed gratitude to Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia’s role in cultivating his professional and personal development. “Throughout my tenure as an undergraduate here in NUMed, I have received ample medical knowledge and invaluable advice from the university’s dedicated lecturers and professors not just when it comes to dealing with patients but also when it comes to facing other problems in life.”
Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) is the international branch campus of Newcastle University in the UK, a prestigious institution with an almost two centuries history of academic excellence. NUMed offers undergraduate degrees in Medicine (MBBS) and Biomedical Sciences (BMS), as well as opportunities for foundation and postgraduate studies. The programmes of study lead to the award of the same degrees as those studied at the parent campus in the UK. Leow, himself participated in the programs earning a Research Scholarship after his second year in the UK and completed his electives in Newcastle University UK in his fourth year of study.
