5 Ways to Optimise e-Learning
The means of knowledge transmission and interactive learning are transcending physical boundaries and taking hold of the digital landscape as we speak. As we move into an advanced era of education, it’s important to master the basics of e-Learning in order to optimize the experience.
Firstly, be punctual and prepared. This may seem like a no brainer, but just because the class is a-click-away doesn’t mean we shouldn’t anticipate possible technical glitches or make necessary preparations. Turn on your laptop 15 minutes before class starts, and make sure that the relevant tabs and folders are ready, the audio is turned on, your earphones are plugged-in if needed, and that the background facing your webcam is tidy and in order.
Next, make sure that you have your stationery ready, and other accompanying essentials such as hard copy documents and drinking water. Also ensure that you’re seated in a comfortable chair and that the room you’re in is conducive for learning. Of course, if the class happens to involve movement such as dance or PE, you’re going to want to move to a more spacious area with little to no furniture, while sustaining a decent internet connection.
Thirdly, take down notes and ask questions. Be proactive! Learning should be interactive and curiosity should be expressed. If you have not mastered the art of taking down notes on your tablet or iPad, a pencil and paper works too. For the shyer ones out there, the beauty of online learning is having the privilege of privately messaging your professor right after the lesson. Whether it’s an e-mail or a direct message, your queries will be answered without having to ask in front of the entire virtual class.
Additionally, have virtual study discussions with your peers. The best way to test your understanding on a subject area is to talk it out with your classmates and pick their brains for ideas, methods and examples. Shared knowledge is enhanced knowledge. Set up a group video call with an agenda in mind so that you won’t go off topic or get too carried away with irrelevant conversations.
Last but not least, do not neglect your e-homework! Assignments and grades awarded online are just as valid as those given in a regular school setting. Due to the fact that learning is conducted within the comfort of one’s home, a certain discipline is required to maintain the commitment and hard work required to get the best out of it. Therefore, gear up and get ready. The future of learning is right at your fingertips – don’t lose your grip!
