The Future of Education is at our Fingertips

We are living in a day and age where our landscape of living has become increasingly digital. From online food delivery and e-hailing services, to international conference calls on Zoom, it’s no wonder that the education sector is transcending physical boundaries as well.

Technology, specifically the internet, has revolutionized our education system through vital innovations that have made it more accessible to the public. Accessibility is key, especially during this worldwide  pandemic where students across the global are required to log on to their classes and lectures online.

The use of the internet has expanded our learning horizons. Teachers can collaborate with educators from other countries, and share resources and materials online that enrich a student’s learning experience. Both teachers and students have access to a vast amount of data, and students are given the chance to develop their researching skills at a younger age by researching information and learning how to analyse them.

Over the years, online learning has been opted as the main form of education, instead of the traditional way of learning in schools or universities. According to a study done by Allen and Seaman (2017), almost half (48%) of all students taking at least one online class, are enrolled only in online programs. So why do learners prefer online learning than traditional education?

In Best Colleges’ 2019 Online Education Trends Report , it was revealed that for the third year in a row, the convenience and flexibility offered by online programs topped the list of reasons. Not having a fixed schedule enables students to select a more favourable time to attend class, hence not needing to rush in the mornings or nod-off during lectures. Besides that, it is a great way to save money, as commuting and student housing fees would no longer be a requirement.

With the internet as our resource, students have a broad range of subjects or courses to choose from. If they feel that their course isn’t fulfilling, or are interested in a subject that isn’t offered on campus, all they need to do is look up for one that’s available online. Their course trajectories are not only customizable, but literally a click away.

The advancement of science and technology has underpinned online education as an easily accessible alternative form of education with huge potential. It offers a level of convenience and flexibility which is crucial to learners living in this fast-paced society. Will online learning replace traditional on-campus education one day? Only time will tell, but what seems evident as of now, is that e-Learning is not a trend, it’s the future.
